The way, the truth, the life

Inspired by John 14

The cool evening breeze lifted the leaves of an old oak tree as Jesus and his disciples sat under the shade and comfort; taking refuge from the day’s woes and hustle and bustle.

The air hung with anticipation and was weighed down with the thickness of the words that the Saviour was about to share. Jesus sat in contemplation while the disciples looked on and just when the silence seemed almost too hard to bear; the Holy One opened his mouthed and shared the all-important words.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1 (NIV)

Jesus followed with confirmation…

2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
John 14: 2-3 (NIV)

Silence hung in the air as the disciples tried to process his words. Questions pooled in their heads, seeking an answer they had yet to find whilst some spilled out of unknowing lips: ‘He’s going away and we know where he’s going?’ ‘What does he mean, how can we know where he’s going unless he tells us?’

Amongst the disciples sat a young man, silent in his ways but open to learn. Timothy inquired and asked, Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?

Jesus looked at him with love for being courageous enough to voice the thoughts of many, in the distance a lonely owl cooed as it nestled for the night; Jesus gathering his thoughts said:

6b I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
John 14: 6b - 7 (NIV)

And so, what does this mean; that we know where God is going? More importantly, if we know where He is going, what are we going to do to follow Him there?

We know the way (Jesus has let us know that He is the way); and because we know the way, we have no excuses but to follow that Way (follow Jesus and be like Him). But we don’t have to be afraid or stressed about this because Jesus has promised help for us – the Holy Spirit. He (the Holy Spirit) is here to remind us of all things – of all of Jesus’s commandments, of everything that we read in the Word; that we may keep them and remain in Jesus as He remains in the Father (John 15:10).

If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
John 15: 10 (NIV)

If we remain in the Father, we will be found in HIM and we will produce much fruit to the glory of our God the Father. Jesus is coming soon everyone (as He promised) and may you and I be found in Him. Amen!
